Rust removal and repair. Repairing rust on your car is something that should be done quickly to prevent it from spreading. It can be easily done without welding, by using strong but inexpensive body filler. You can even paint the car yourself. Rust repair is common at the wheel wells and rocker panels of cars and in this video I show the proper and most thorough way to remove and repair rust.

+ChrisFix ill try a few things different that i picked up on ur vid next time. Maybe a little more wet sanding and paint blending will make the difference. I hate rust. I have some unconventional ways to fight it. Used oil helps, I spray it every where I can underneath my trucks.

If it's just the pieces of rust around the wheels it's fine, but if it's caused by awful water outflows jams and water gets stuck beneath the surface and pretty much rust the car from the inside it won't help at all...

So I just finished this up about a week ago. I thought it looked great but so of the spots, I'm noticing that the paint is bubbling. I allowed the primer to dry for the recommended time. Any idea what I should do to fix it? I really don't want to sand it all back down!

You should of titled this, "How to make a car from a rusty tomatoe can". Kidding aside, great how to video for an average person trying to make a way above average at home rust repair on a budget, using awsome 3M products. But, if you did find a rusty tomatoe can, it would be good way to get some rust repair practice... and once you learned how to do rust repair, youd probably be able to earn a good living, and buy a new rust free car. Great video!

Sadly, rust is inside the hollow areas of the car. Then when a bubble paint start. You have more than little spot to fix. It'll last about a year or less. Then rust breaks out around the repair and shows up larger than the first fix.. If you can find a low mileage car and right away put in cavity grease, will help keep it from starting inside..

A WORD OF CAUTION REGARDING THE UNDERCOATING: If it does become damaged or porous, which is definitely possible as it gets older, it can trap moisture, creating an ideal environment for rust. Depending on where you live, it can be easier to simply maintain rust inhibitor or paint on areas that would be undercoated than maintaining that undercoat. My w123 body Mercedes 300D came from the factory with a very thick, rubberized undercoat. In the past 40 years, a small break in the body tub near the front corner of the passenger seat turned into a football-sized rust hole. Currently attacking it with Hirsch Hot Rod paint (which I believe works similarly to POR-15) painted on and soaked into big sheets of fiberglass cloth to patch. Keep in mind that the body tub does not need to be pretty, but the body panels around your wheel well probably do. My vehicle spent most of its life in central California. In wetter states, as well as those that use road salt, I would probably need to use boat-hull levels of fiberglass or weld in some sheet metal to prevent my passengers from falling out of the bottom of the car.

That is just gonna bubble back up through and split the filler off in 12 months time. You can't just filler over rust eaten steel like that. You NEED to cut all that rust cancer out and weld a new section in, or you'll be chasing your tail with cracking filler every 6-12 months. And painting it with single stage acrylic paint out of a can?!? Acrylic will just fry up in the sun in about 12 months time, and go dull. This repair will look fine for a few months, but ultimately the paint and the filler will fail prematurely, especially in an area like that which gets road spray from the rear wheel.

I'm not a professional body man, don't claim to be. I am however a licensed automotive service technician. I've been doing body work on my own vehicles for probably thirty years. This repair will not last, especially if you live in a high moisture place. I will admit he does explain quite well. This would be good only if you are selling and you want to make some more money. If you are keeping the car any metal that has pitted would need to be cut out and new metal welded in. That's the reality.

That "repair" won't last long, month or two and bubbles are back. Unless you live in the area where cars don't rust at all... This repair is for selling the car quick to someone who has to repair it properly quite soon... Leave even a small hole to metal and the moisture will find it's way trough...
